retro

September 15 is Mexico's Independence Day. We rode the bus back from "campamento" to the city today, I changed my shirt, and headed to a party with one of the students we met on campus. Their whole extended family was there, including the drunk uncle, friends of the older kids, and the random friend of the family that has always been there, but nobody really knows why. It was really fun, really Mexican, and absolutely delicious (foodwise).
Fireworks in Mexico City are officially illegal. Apparently, you can get them pretty easily if you know the right guy and the right way to ask. Fireworks in Mexico are ... much less safe and much less boring than US fireworks. I've never seen grown men run so fast from fireworks. It was really fun.
We're thinking about the balance of relating to Mexicans as friends while trying not to take advantage of their hospitality, the way they view us as celebrities, and often enough to be a concern, their affection.
